Zumba is the most fun I have ever had in a dance class, I joined Virgin Active in July last year 2014, I have the most fun at Shruti’s classes the vibrant people and music kept me motivated and going back for more!

Shruti is a Zumba instructor I met last year, she’s a down to earth gentle soul, with loads of personality, great to be around.

Shruti shares some info with us about Zumba:

1. What is the ZUMBA® Program?

The ZUMBA® program is a Latin-inspired, dance-fitness class that incorporates Latin and international music with dance movements that creates a dynamic, exciting, exhilarating and effective fitness system. Dancers and non-dancers alike immediately and easily master a Zumba class because previous dance experience is not necessary. A Zumba class creates a party-like atmosphere that provides a non-intimidating opportunity for non-dancers, new exercisers, or those who have previously hesitated to participate in group classes.

2. How was Zumba created?

Alberto “Beto” Perez is the creative genius behind the ZUMBA® program. He began dancing as a young boy in Colombia. As a teenager, he used his dance skills to help pay the bills by choreographing for local artists and dancing in salsa clubs. He later won a scholarship to the prestigious Maria Sanford Brazilian Dance Academy. After graduating, he became an instructor at the Academy, specializing in Latin Dance. Later, his interest in physical fitness led him to become a certified personal trainer and group exercise instructor. One day, upon arriving to one of his classes, he realized he had left his traditional aerobics music at home. Improvising, he unpacked some of his favourite Latin music tapes from his backpack, popped them into the sound system and taught his first Zumba class. Within months, his class caught on and soon the rest of the world followed.

3. What motivates you to teach Zumba and why so many people enjoy it the world over?

Having done classical Indian dancing (Bharatanatyam and Kathak) as well as western modern dancing, I have always had a passion for dance. Being a long distance runner as well, I also have a passion for cardiovascular fitness. Zumba brings the best of both worlds together to create one awesome form of exercise, tailor made for me! The ZUMBA® program is “exercise in disguise”. It feels so good that you don’t realize that you are exercising and you want to do it every day. The music, steps, moves and energy make it far from mundane or boring. As a registered instructor, it is always exciting to receive new material (music and choreography) every month so that I can keep things fresh and exciting for myself and everyone attending my classes. Each person attending a Zumba class brings their own vibrant energy which, when put together in a group, forms a wave of positivity which I, as an instructor, can feed off of and reflect back into the class… it’s infectious!!

4. The benefits of Zumba:

Zumba combines fast and slow rhythms that tone and sculpt the body using an aerobic/fitness approach to achieve a unique blended balance of cardio and muscle-toning benefits. The ZUMBA® program integrates some of the basic principles of aerobic, interval and resistance training to maximize caloric output, cardiovascular benefits and total body toning. The cardio-based dance movements are easy-to-follow steps that include body sculpting, which targets areas such as gluteus, legs, arms, core, abdominals and the most important muscle in the body – the heart. Zumba is great for the mind, body and soul!

5. Tips for my amazing readers:

It is only human for us to be reluctant to move out of our comfort zones and try something new, different or challenging. The key to achieving fitness goals is to adhere to a fitness program. After persevering and attending a few classes, you will be able to master the basic steps. The amazing thing about Zumba is that you can slow down and use small movements initially and then slowly build up to making bigger movements with the upper and lower body and increase the impact of the workout. The more energy you use, the fitter you will get and the more calories you will burn!
