Sugar Addiction Part 1

  
Sugar addiction is a serious problem, it can cause so many health issues, it’s time we take this seriously and not sweep this under the carpet.

With so many American outlets opening in South Africa, we are now consuming more coffee, doughnuts, burgers & sweets.

What safety measures are we taking as a nation? How about we promote healthy drive through take out outlets, give these junk food outlets a run for their money?

Know where your sugar intake is coming from, so you know what to avoid. Obvious sources of sugar are soda, fruit juices, and refined sugar. Some breads have high amounts of sugar as well, As you become more aware of where sugar is hiding, you can eliminate those sources as well. Did you know, for example, that mayonnaise has sugar, as well as salad dressings? There’s no need to really dress your salad with sugary fixes.

  
This is an ongoing challenge for many of us, I personally go through cycles of this addiction only to come to the realization that addiction takes 21 days to break any habit or addiction, one of the best ways is to cut out all refined sugars, processed foods from your diet.

The best place to start is to determine why we are consuming so much sugar, whether the void we are trying to fill is emotional, boredom, loneliness. Dehydration is often mistaken for hunger as we reach for that cupcake or chocolate bar.

Effects of sugar addiction:

  1. Speeds up the ageing process
  2. Headaches
  3. Heart palpitations 
  4. Chronic fatigue 
  5. Fat storage increases 
  6. Prone to illness
  7. Diabetes 
  8. High blood pressure 

And the list continues, you get the idea.

When we experience more energy through excercising and eating wholesome foods, we begin to see the bigger picture, I will share more benefits of reducing or cutting out sugar from your diet in the upcoming posts.

  1. I cut mine a couple of years ago when I did the Paleo 30 day Reboot. It changed my life and the way I look at food. Now that I’m vegetarian I eat things you not supposed to on paleo, like brown rice, baked potato and lentils, but the weight has stayed off because of not eating sugar and wheat. 🙂 Thanks for the lovely post! xx

  2. Hi Neeta, thanks for the interesting blog. This is something I personally experienced and have worked past the sugar addiction. A few years back I was addicted to potato, and craved it all the time! Now I can safely say NO to potato or even sweet things and when I do over indulge in sweet things (at times) I do feel the sugar high then the sugar low (not nice at all!). Eating healthy is a challenge especially when working for long hours but I have come to appreciate myself enough that I make time to eat the correct foods as it is for my own health and well being in the long run. Thanks for the inspiration and look forward to reading more blogs 🙂
