Laughter therapy

Laughter brings healing is my experience for sure, I had a chat to Anjana Lala, laughter coach and speaker.

I was curious to know what is laughter therapy all about, I haven’t had an opportunity to try it as yet, I did have the pleasure of receiving this wealth of information from Anjana.

1. How did your journey begin with laughter therapy?

I always had this empty feeling in a corner of my heart. I left corporate world. I did the corporate sting as I wanted to get the big job big money big title. As much as I tried it just was not for me. I was unhappy under that smile. Pretended all was ok. I took to emotional eating to fill in the gap and void. I saw Laughter Yoga being done in the parks when I visited India in 1998. It stayed with me at the back of my mind.

I got the courage one day to resign on the spot. Left the corporate world. I started exploring different forms of work and did many courses. It was interesting. Discovered many new talents. Laughter Yoga still spoke to me. I researched places to do the course. I found a trainer in SA 2010 and then went on to meet the brainchild Dr Kataria (2011) to do the teachers course. Met myriad of people around the world. It’s a global movement and I belong a global family. It’s awesome. It’s meant for me. Laughter Yoga lights up my life. It broke so many barriers for me personally. I broke the fear of travelling alone, speaking on stage in front of so many people, meeting new interesting people, boosted my confidence and self-worth. I do not take life so seriously and myself as well. Sweating the small stuff and striving for perfection has gone out the window. Life is just so much better lighter and brighter.

The cherry on top of this cake is people connect with their inner joy and happiness.

I do corporate workshops for Team Building, Year End functions. Stress Management and Boost Staff Energy and Morale.

2: What can we expect at a workshop?

The foremost requirement is that we leave our logical, rational and intellectual adult-self at home. All you to bring is your child-like innocent playful self. There is clapping, singing and laughing. We scuttle around showing imaginary credit card bill bursting into laughter. Next we listen to a made-up cellphone story, scurry around shaking people’s hands. It may feel a wee bit ridiculous. At times embarrassing! Some laughter exercises are eccentric while others unbecoming and peculiar. Some people cackle, some give the sceptical whimsical snort while others have a rumbling roaring laughter. Absolutely fun, social and contagious!

The second element breathing exercises. The breathing exercises come naturally while doing the laughing yoga exercises. Breathing is fundamental to having a good healthy mind and body. Breathing is a function most us take for granted. We have lost the natural art of breathing. Laughter Yoga uses the art of laughing with deep yogic breathing to promote correct breathing.

Laughter is the quickest and effortless way of regulating breathing and increasing the net supply of oxygen by exhaling longer and flushing the lungs. It brings more oxygen to the blood and to the brain. Breathing controls the Prana (life force) and revitalizes the body.

When under stress, strain and depression, our oxygen level diminishes and breathing becomes faster, shallow and irregular. Sometimes people hold their breath under stress which leads to accumulation of carbon dioxide in the blood. A laughter exercise encompasses the principles of deep diaphragmatic breathing which is the easiest way to counter unhealthy effects of physical, mental and emotional stress.

By the end of the laughter yoga session one is wondering if it was the combination of oxygen and endorphins or simply amazed at all the crazy things done with a group of total strangers that had one laughing/crying or both. The child-like playfulness is the laughter tonic re-vitalising and re-awakening of the inner spirit of laughter.
